Why you’ll love this recipe

This banana bread is easy to make and uses simple ingredients. This recipe calls for pre-made caramel sauce to save a little time! Although, you can make your own if you want to.

Ingredients needed

For the banana bread:

  • Ripe bananas: Any where from spotty to turning black works.
  • All purpose flour: The base of the banana bread batter.
  • White sugar and brown sugar: To sweeten the banana bread.
  • Baking soda and baking powder: To help the banana bread rise.
  • Salt
  • Cinnamon and nutmeg: To give the banana bread some spice.
  • Vanilla extract
  • Butter: I recommend using unsalted butter. Salted butter has more water content and can effect your results.
  • Buttermilk: If you don’t have any buttermilk you can easily make some with milk and lemon juice or vinegar. To make one cup of buttermilk, simply add one cup of room temperature milk to two tablespoons of vinegar or lemon juice.
  • Eggs: You will need two large eggs for this recipe.

For the topping:

  • Caramel sauce
  • Sea salt

For this recipe, you need a store bought caramel sauce. I used the type you can use in coffee drinks. For the salt, you will need a quality sea salt. If you’re not a fan of salted caramel, you can skip the sea salt and make this just a caramel drizzled banana bread.

Can I use frozen bananas?

If you have frozen bananas on hand you can totally use them in this recipe. Let them defrost a little so they are easier to mash and then mix in with the batter.

How to make this recipe (step by step guide)

To make this banana bread, begin by gathering and measuring out your ingredients.

To make the banana bread, mix the dry ingredients together in a large mixing bowl. Next add in your wet ingredients except for the caramel sauce. Please make sure you cool your butter a little bit or it will scramble the eggs. Using a hand mixer, mix for about three minutes or until the batter is well mixed and no longer lumpy. Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan. Pour two tablespoons of caramel sauce on top of the batter and then use a butter knife to swirl it in.

Bake your banana bread for 55 to 60 minutes at 350 degrees. A toothpick should come out clean from the middle of your loaf, if not bake it a little longer. Next, pull your loaf of banana bread out of your oven and let it cool for about 15 minutes.

While it is still warm (but has cooled a little), sprinkle the sea salt over your loaf evenly.

Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of caramel sauce over the sea salt and banana bread.

Serve and enjoy. Refrigerate any leftovers.

Can I freeze this banana bread?

I’m a huge fan of making recipes that freeze well but because of the salted caramel sauce this banana bread does not freeze well. You can freeze the banana bread then add the salted caramel later though.

How to store leftovers

You can store this banana bread in an airtight container for 2-3 days in the refrigerator. When you are ready to eat some more banana bread from the fridge, heat it up using a low setting on your microwave to avoid scorching the caramel. Drizzle with some extra caramel sauce and enjoy.

Tips for this recipe

Be sure that you refrigerate any leftovers. You will want to warm up leftovers on low to avoid scorching your caramel sauce.

You'll likely notice a more robust flavor, and the finished baked goods' color may also be darker. These color, flavor, and texture alterations come from how brown sugar is made.

You Use Too Much Banana

Using too much banana could make your bread heavy and damp in the center, causing it to appear undercooked and unappealing. If you have bananas leftover, you can always freeze them for later use.

How do you wrap banana bread so it doesn't get soggy? ›

Can I use powdered sugar instead of granulated sugar? ›

It is not recommended to substitute powdered sugar for granulated sugar. Since powdered sugar has a much finer texture, and it contains a small percentage of cornstarch to prevent caking, substituting can give you unexpected results. Q.

Can I use soft brown sugar instead of white sugar? ›

Brown sugar is the simplest substitute for granulated sugar. You can use light or dark brown sugar as a 1:1 substitute. It makes for darker, denser baked goods with a more caramel or molasses flavor, which is wonderful for classic chocolate chip cookies, but less desirable for delicate cakes.

Can bananas be too mushy for banana bread? ›

Here's the secret: overripe bananas don't necessarily mean too-ripe bananas for banana bread. It really comes down to personal preference. Those brown-speckled, mostly yellow bananas are still ripe and will bake into a great loaf.

Why is my banana bread dense and not fluffy? ›

As tempting as it may be to dump all those overripe bananas into your batter, four medium-sized bananas are typically the most that a single loaf of banana bread can accommodate — any more and you're likely looking at a loaf that's going to be dense and heavy rather than soft and moist in the middle.

Can I leave banana bread uncovered overnight? ›

If you're planning to eat your banana bread within three to four days, it can be left out at room temperature. To keep it fresh, place a paper towel in the bottom of an airtight container. Place the loaf of banana bread on top, add another paper towel, and put the lid on the container.

Is it better to wrap banana bread in foil or plastic wrap? ›

Once it is completely cool, Roszkowski says to keep banana bread fresh by placing it in an airtight container, wrapping it in plastic wrap, or even slicing it and wrapping it in plastic wrap. "This will make sure the banana bread does not lose its moisture and become stale."

How long should you let banana bread cool before wrapping? ›

Livestrong suggests allowing your banana bread to cool in its loaf pan for 15 minutes, as the brief "cooling period allows steam to condense, which makes the bread easier to remove from the pan." Then, while the bread is still warm, Allrecipes recommends transferring it to a cooling rack to fully reach room temperature ...

Should you refrigerate banana bread? ›

The best way to store banana bread is at room temperature in an airtight container. Though it will only stay fresh for about four days on the counter, this will keep your banana bread tasting the freshest.

Is salted caramel the same as dulce de leche? ›

Caramel and dulce de leche might look and taste somewhat similar, but they are actually pretty different. While caramel is made from slowly simmering water and sugar until it caramelizes, dulce de leche is made from simmering milk and sugar super slowly until it turns into a creamy, caramelized substance.

What makes salted caramel so good? ›

These are sweet, salty, sour, bitter and umami. Salted caramel combines two of these, giving an effect that chefs call “flavour layering”. Salt also acts as an enhancer of flavour (that's why you sprinkle it on your chips, for instance), so that's why it makes caramel taste even better.

Is sea salt caramel same as butterscotch? ›

Butterscotch and caramel taste very different from each other. Butter scotch is bit harder and as suggested by name is made by brown sugar and butter whereas caramel is softer and made by white granulated sugar with either milk/whipped cream or butter with pinch of vanilla.

What happens if you substitute brown sugar for white sugar? ›

You can still swap them, but you'll need to use less brown sugar in a recipe that calls for white. Brown sugar will add a caramel-ish hint to your baked good and darken its color.

Why do people use brown sugar instead of white? ›

The molasses in brown sugar adds more moisture to the baked good, so it makes your finished product even softer than white sugar would. Sugar helps make some baking recipes light and airy.

What is the difference between white sugar and brown sugar when used in a recipe? ›

The molasses contained in brown sugar retains moisture, so when used it results in softer but denser baked goods. For example, cookies made with brown sugar will be more moist and dense, while cookies made with white sugar will expand more, allowing more air into the dough and resulting in a more spongy texture.
