In the 1950s and 1960s, the construction of giant #concrete shells was a feat of cutting-edge engineering. Such #structures could span dozens of metres and be mere centimetres thick! But the technique has fallen out of use, and as a result the required mathematics is mostly forgotten. And that is a shame, according to Andrew Borgart. "Giant shells are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also resource-efficient and therefore better for the environment!" He spent the past 15 years balancing his two passions: teaching classes at our faculty while reconstructing this lost skill... mostly using pens and paper.https://lnkd.in/gJe9SZSd

The temporary #transformation of vacant buildings into housing can provide relief for 'urgent seekers', such as people with residence permits, students, and first-time buyers. However, it also presents the challenge of making these houses feel like #homes. During her doctoral research, Marjolein Overtoom discovered six possible meanings that residents attach, to various degrees, to their home. She also found three types of activities which develop those meanings. Which ones do you recognise?https://lnkd.in/eSUA83Gj

This year, the TU Delft Spring Symposium 2024 was organised by the TU Delft AI Initiative. The topic was #AI in #education, with experts on everything from physics to law discussing how AI could be a game changer for their field.Georg Vrachliotis and Kees Kaan from our faculty held keynotes on the intersection of architecture and AI. How does AI aid knowledge discovery? And what are its practical implications for professionals? You can read a retrospective of the entire event and see the pictures on https://lnkd.in/gSzDNtXq

"I was struck by how much I recognised. Pretending to call when you feel unsafe, or taking a longer route to avoid alleys... I think all women are familiar with such strategies."Dr Geertje Slingerland organised interviews and collaborative sessions with young women (aged 12-18) from Rotterdam South. Her team aimed to discover the link between urban design and perception of #safety. When do these young women feel (un)safe? And how can we help?Read more: https://lnkd.in/ds_FhrHC

AMS Institute was founded in 2014 by the TU Delft, Wageningen University & Research (WUR) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). They are an important partner of the TU Delft generally and our faculty specifically.Read their new press release about a selection of research projects which investigate practical measures to cut carbon emissions and increase circularity. Not at some point in the future, but today. The article features one of 'our' researchers, Dr Elizabeth Migoni Alejandre.

One of the main goals of Dr Nico Tillie, head of the Urban Ecology Design group, is to provide more space for nature on the TU Delft campus. Traditionally, Urban Ecology has been dominated by biologists, Nico explains. "But during the past decade or so, it has become increasingly clear that this research area benefits enormously from visions from other fields, such as landscape architecture or urban planning. They can give a more practical interpretation to the ideas from Urban Ecology."One of the main projects undertaken by Nico and his team is ECOCampus. It serves a double purpose: making the campus a nicer place for people and creating links in Delft's ecological web.#biodiversity #urbanecologyRead more: https://lnkd.in/eh3Uchw

Greening post-war residential neighbourhoods produces the biggest urban climate and biodiversity gains. Professor Urban Design and urban planner Tess Broekmans: “Making a neighbourhood compact, increasing population density, can actually make it more liveable.”When asked if we know how to build a climate-proof and biodiverse neighbourhood, Tess Broekmans replies: "To get it right, you need to involve everyone - all the different experts - from the get-go, including people like an ecologist, a water board rep and a civil engineer to fit in all the pipes and cables. #biodiversity #urbanplanningRead more: https://lnkd.in/eAe4FvSm

The Netherlands as trading country needs major spatial planning rethink. Big box warehouse construction throughout the Dutch landscape is a controversial issue. But how much and what sort of space is actually being claimed by the logistics sector, and how does this stand in relation to economic value and sustainable development? In his PhD research at TU Delft, architect-researcher Merten Nefs is studying the changing nature of the Netherlands as a trading country and the spatial effects this has. "We need to be circular by 2050, which means we will be doing a lot more repairing and refurbishing. The logistics complex has to facilitate this by housing the right processes in the right locations." Merten Nefs will defend his thesis on 21 May. #landscapeoftrade #spatialplanningRead more: https://lnkd.in/ehQ8q7MJ
